Nearly all Australians have either been affected by mental health issues themselves or know someone who has.

This is why it’s so important to know what you can do to help yourself or a loved one. This could be as simple as wearing a medical wristband for mental health.

In our latest post, we find out which wristbands could help support you or someone you know.

Mental health in Australia

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, over 40% of Australians aged 16 to 85 years have experienced a mental health issue at some point in their lives.

Between 2020 and 2022, anxiety was the most common mental health disorder, lasting 12 months or more and affecting 17.2% of the population.

This category includes conditions such as generalised anxiety disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Meanwhile, 7.5% of Australians had a 12-month affective disorder. This type of disorder includes depression and bipolar affective disorder.

And 3.3% were living with substance use disorders, involving alcohol or drugs.

Medical ID wristbands for mental health

Wearing a medic alert wristband is a simple way to help manage your emotional wellbeing.

Medical alert bracelets or other forms of ID can be customised with information about your condition, including emergency contact numbers. This means that if you have an emergency, your caregivers have easy access to this information, get you the appropriate help and contact loved ones on your behalf.

Know that med alerts are versatile and can be printed with any information you wish. Simply choose a plain silicone wristband and have it customised with any combination of the following:

  • Your mental health condition
  • Any other condition, like allergies
  • Your medication
  • Your emergency contact details
  • “See medical card” if you also carry one with you
  • Your online medical records membership number

Alternatively, you could opt for a pre-printed wristband relating to your or your loved one’s condition.

Our dementia wristband is one of our bestsellers, providing peace of mind to people living with dementia and their families. If you have a loved one with dementia, then you will know that they may get confused or anxious at times. Knowing that they are wearing a bracelet that explains their condition reassures you that they will get the help they need should this happen.

If your child finds it difficult to communicate their feelings, check out our emotion bracelet. One side is green, while the other is red. Your child can indicate how they’re feeling according to the side on display. This is an easy way for them to express themselves without having to have an in-depth conversation.

Self-care for mental health

Wearing a mental health wristband is one easy thing you can do for yourself to provide self-care.

Here are some other steps you can take to help manage your symptoms and improve your emotional wellbeing:

Keep a journal. You can track your moods and work out any patterns to help you manage your emotions better. Journalling is also a great way to express yourself and work through your feelings.

Connect with friends and family. If you’re feeling low, reach out to loved ones. Even just sharing a coffee and chatting with someone close to you can boost your emotional wellbeing.

Look after your physical needs too. Eat a healthy diet, try to exercise every day and avoid alcohol and drugs, which are likely to lower your mood. Staying fit and active can make a real difference to your emotional wellbeing.
