Who wears a medical alert necklace
People with chronic conditions, severe allergies, or on medications that responders need to know about wear a medical alert necklace so paramedics can read the wearer's information in seconds when they can't speak for themselves. Diabetes, epilepsy, blood thinners, pacemakers, anaphylaxis, dementia and autism are the most common reasons people choose Mediband.
For wearers who don't want a wristband at work, in the shower, or during sport, a stainless steel heart pendant sits at the collarbone, visible whether sleeves are up or down.

What to engrave on a medical alert pendant
The Mediband heart pendant has the Medical Star of Life Alert Logo pre-stamped on the front. The back is laser-engraved with the wearer's medical information. The format Australian paramedics look for:
- Condition: e.g. "Type 1 Diabetes", "Anticoagulant: Warfarin", "Epilepsy"
- Medication or critical info: e.g. "Insulin pump", "Allergic to Penicillin"
- Emergency contact name + relationship
- Emergency contact phone number
Engraving is laser-cut into the steel — not printed on top. Use fewer characters for easier readability under emergency conditions.
How Australian responders read a medical alert necklace
Paramedics in Australia are trained to look for medical ID jewellery at the neck and wrists as part of the primary patient assessment. The Star of Life logo on the back of the heart pendant signals "medical information here." Responders flip the pendant, read the engraved conditions and contacts, and adjust treatment within the first minute of arrival.
Stainless steel stays legible after years of fair daily wear, where soft-metal alternatives can scuff the engraving over time.
Heart pendant vs bracelet — which one fits
The pendant suits wearers who:
- Work in trades or with machinery where a wristband can snag
- Wear long sleeves most of the year
- Prefer jewellery that looks decorative rather than medical
- Already wear other wrist jewellery they don't want to remove
A silicone or stainless steel medical alert bracelet may suit better if the wearer plays contact sport, prefers a wristband for visibility, or has a nickel allergy that surgical stainless steel still triggers.

Frequently asked questions
Can I wear this medical alert necklace in the shower or swimming?
Yes. Surgical stainless steel is fully water-resistant. The chain and pendant don't tarnish in chlorinated pool water, salt water, or shower water. Daily wear is safe.
How long does the engraving last?
Mediband's quality guarantee covers the engraving against manufacturing defects with fair daily use. The engraving is laser-cut into the steel rather than printed on top, so it doesn't fade. Heavy abrasive wear over time can reduce contrast at the surface, but the engraved depth remains readable. For wearers in heavy-wear contexts (trades, contact sport), consider a second pendant as a backup.
Will airport metal detectors trigger on the necklace?
Stainless steel necklaces are typically too small to set off airport scanners. Pacemaker wearers should always tell security officers about implanted devices regardless of whether the necklace triggers.
What size chain comes with the heart pendant?
The Mediband heart pendant ships with a 49cm (490mm) stainless steel chain — suits most adults. The chain is included free of charge.
Can I change the engraving if my condition changes?
The pendant can be re-engraved by returning it to Mediband (re-engraving fee applies). Many wearers buy a second pendant when conditions change rather than re-engrave the original.
Is the heart pendant suitable for kids?
The 49cm chain is sized for adults. For school-age children and younger, a silicone medical alert wristband is usually a better fit (and lower choking risk than a chain).
Does Mediband offer this with NDIS funding?
NDIS participants can claim Mediband products under "Consumables" or "Assistive Technology" categories depending on the wearer's plan — talk to your NDIS plan manager. Mediband is NDIS-registered. Medical alert jewellery isn't covered under Medicare.
