In short: A ribbed silicone medical alert band with a stainless steel deployant clasp, a laser-engraved steel plate and interchangeable condition badges you can swap as your needs change. Engraving is free. Designed in Australia, NDIS-registered supplier.

A silicone band built to move

The Active X is a soft, ribbed silicone band on a hinged stainless steel deployant clasp, with a low-profile engraved steel plate seated on the outside. It is made for wrists that are doing something — running, training, swimming, shift work, sleep — where a chain bracelet gets taken off and a rigid bangle gets in the way.

The clasp is the part worth noticing. It folds flat and locks rather than hooking, so the band does not pop open when a sleeve drags over it, and it can be put on one-handed once it is sized.

The badge system — what makes it the X

This is the only real difference between the two Active bands. The X carries a slot for an interchangeable condition badge alongside the engraved plate, so the visible flag on your wrist can change without re-engraving anything.

Six interchangeable Active X metal badges arranged in two columns: DIABETES, the Mediband logo, ASTHMA, a red Star of Life, a red heart and ALLERGY

How swapping works in practice

Badges clip into the band and are sold separately, so you can keep more than one and change which is showing. That matters in a few specific situations:

  • A new diagnosis arrives and the old plate is still otherwise accurate
  • One condition matters more in one setting than another — allergy at school, asthma at sport
  • Someone manages more than one condition and wants the most urgent one visible
  • A child's situation changes faster than you want to keep buying engraved plates

When the fixed plate is the better buy

If your situation is stable and you are never going to swap anything, the badge slot is a feature you will not use. The Active Classic is the same idea without it, and costs less. Choosing the X for a condition that will not change is paying for flexibility you do not need.

The engraved plate

Your details are laser-engraved into the steel plate. Engraving is included in the price, the cut is deep rather than printed, and steel does not fade the way a colour-filled silicone band does — so the plate stays readable for the life of the band.

What to engrave, in order

  1. The condition or allergy — the fact that changes what a responder does next.
  2. A critical medication or device — an anticoagulant, insulin, a pump, a pacemaker.
  3. A contact number, with the country code if you travel.

Worked examples, in the shape that reads well on a plate this size:

  • EPILEPSY / NO RESCUE MED / 0400 000 000 — the condition plus the one thing a bystander should not attempt.
  • T1 DIABETES / INSULIN PUMP / 0400 000 000 — diagnosis and device, because staff need the device known before they touch it.
  • ASTHMA / RELIEVER IN BAG / 0400 000 000 — useful at a sports ground, where the bag is usually within reach and nobody knows to look.

Each of those is three short lines and each answers a question someone will actually have. Compare that with a plate carrying a date of birth and a street address, which answers none of them.

Keep it short. Fewer characters engrave larger and read faster, and anything that changes yearly — addresses, dose numbers, full medication lists — belongs on a card rather than cut into steel. Our guide to medical ID abbreviations covers which shorthand clinicians read reliably. If you would rather build the whole ID from scratch, start at custom ID.

See it on the wrist

Who wears one

Anyone with a condition that changes emergency treatment and who cannot rely on being able to explain it — diabetes, epilepsy, anaphylaxis and allergies, anticoagulation, an implanted device, autism or dementia.

ASCIA, the peak professional body for clinical immunology and allergy in Australia and New Zealand, puts it plainly for drug allergy: the allergy should be recorded in hospital, doctor and pharmacy records, and you may also be advised to carry medical identification. Checking wrists and neck for that identification is part of a standard primary survey — see do paramedics check medical ID.

Browse by need in medical alert bracelets, the anaphylaxis ID guide, or move it off the wrist entirely with medical alert necklaces.

Fit, wear and care

Sport, water and sleep

Silicone and steel, so it goes in the pool, the shower and the surf without being removed — which is the point, because the ID you take off for swimming is the one missing when something happens at the pool. Rinse after chlorine or salt water. It is light enough to sleep in, and the flat clasp will not dig in.

Sizing and the clasp

Measure around the wrist and check our wrist measurement guide. The band should sit snug enough not to slide over the hand but loose enough to turn; a deployant clasp is unforgiving of a band that is too tight, because it fastens at a fixed length.

Looking after the plate

Warm soapy water and a dry cloth. Engraved steel does not need polishing to stay legible. Check the clasp hinge and the badge seat once or twice a year — a badge that has worked loose is better found at home than lost on a run.

Bought once, nothing to renew

The information is engraved into the plate, so the band works with no app, no battery, no account and no subscription — see medical alert bracelets with no subscription. MedibandPlus is available as an optional digital medical-history membership; the band works fully without it.

Ordering several

For a clinic, a school, a sporting club, an aged-care provider or a disability service ordering several with different engraving on each, tell us quantities and we will come back with pricing and a date.

Frequently asked questions

Are the badges included?

No — badges are sold separately so you can choose which conditions you want and add more later. The band ships with the engraved steel plate, which is included.

Can I change the engraving later?

The engraving itself is permanent. The badge is the part designed to change — that is the reason to choose the X over the Classic. If the engraved text itself needs updating, you need a new plate.

Will it survive swimming and the gym?

Yes. Silicone band, steel clasp and plate, no fabric and nothing to fade. Rinse it after chlorine or salt water and dry it — that is the whole routine.

Is it suitable for a child?

It is one of the better options for a child whose situation is still changing, because the badge can be swapped without buying a new engraved plate. Measure the wrist first and re-measure as they grow.

Does the badge replace the engraving?

No — they do different jobs. The badge is the quick visual flag; the engraved plate carries the detail a responder reads once they look closer. Wear both.

Is there a monthly fee?

No. The information is engraved on the plate rather than stored behind a paywall, so there is nothing to renew for it to keep working.
