Engraving Tips:

1. Text will be engraved (ID &/or condition) on the back of the tag

2. Using fewer characters will make your engraved text easier to read

A medical ID that reads as jewellery

A stainless steel curb-chain bracelet with a red enamel Star of Life set into a polished plate. Worn, it looks like an ID bracelet — which is the point. It does not announce a diagnosis across a room, and it does not look like equipment.

The plate arrives blank. Your details are engraved into the back, free of charge, before it ships.

Classic or Slim — the only real decision

We make this bracelet in two widths. They are the same steel, the same red Star of Life, the same engraving service and the same price. What changes is how much wrist it covers and how much text fits comfortably on the plate.

If you want the same shape in a warmer finish, the gold classic is the matching option, and dog tags are the neck-worn alternative where a wrist band is impractical. The wider range sits under stainless steel medical alert bracelets.

What to engrave

This is the part worth thinking about before you order, because engraving is permanent.

Lead with what changes treatment

A responder is not reading a medical history — they are deciding what to do in the next two minutes. The facts that change that decision are a short list: the condition or allergy, a critical medication such as an anticoagulant or insulin, an implanted device, and a contact number. Everything else belongs in a wallet card or a record.

Wording that gets read correctly

Spell out anything a non-specialist has to act on. Abbreviations save space but cost time if the reader has to decode them first, and some are ambiguous between specialties. Our guide to medical ID abbreviations covers which shorthand is safe and which is better written in full.

How much actually fits

Fewer characters engrave larger and read faster. The plate will hold several short lines, but a plate crammed edge to edge is slower to read than one carrying three things that matter. If you have more to say than fits, put the essentials here and the detail on a card.

Three worked examples of the shape that reads well:

  • ANAPHYLAXIS — PEANUT / EPIPEN IN BAG / 0400 000 000 — the trigger, the treatment and who to call.
  • ON WARFARIN / INR CLINIC / 0400 000 000 — the medication is the urgent fact; the clinic tells a hospital where to verify.
  • TYPE 1 DIABETES / INSULIN PUMP / 0400 000 000 — the diagnosis plus the device, because staff need to know before they handle a pump.

Notice what is absent from all three: dates of birth, addresses, full medical histories and anything that will be out of date in a year. A plate that stays accurate for a decade is worth more than one that was comprehensive on the day it was engraved.

Engraving is on the back of the plate, so the face keeps its clean look and the information is there when someone turns it over. Add your text when you order — it is included in the price, and these ship with same-day engraving.

Why this is worth wearing at all

The case is not ours alone. ASCIA, the peak professional body for clinical immunology and allergy in Australia and New Zealand, states that where a drug allergy is confirmed, the allergy should be recorded in hospital, doctor and pharmacy records — and that you may also be advised to carry medical identification of your allergy.

The same logic applies to anticoagulation, insulin dependence, epilepsy and implanted cardiac devices: the information exists in your file, and the file is not in the room. Checking wrists and neck for identification is part of a standard primary survey, which we go through in do paramedics check medical ID.

Getting the fit right

A chain bracelet should sit against the wrist bone without pinching, and should not spin so freely that the plate rides underneath out of sight. Aim for about a finger's width of movement.

Measure around the wrist and compare against our wrist measurement guide before ordering. If you are between sizes on a curb chain, size up rather than down — links can be removed to shorten a chain, but adding length means sourcing matching links.

Metal, skin and care

If you have reacted to jewellery before

Stainless steel is the standard material for everyday jewellery and is well tolerated by most people. It is not a guarantee: Healthdirect describes contact dermatitis as a common itchy rash that appears where skin touches an allergen or irritant, diagnosed by patch testing and managed by avoiding the trigger.

If metal jewellery has given you a rash before, talk to your GP or pharmacist about what you react to before buying any steel ID — and consider a silicone band instead, which has no metal at all. Irritation under a band worn too tightly, with moisture trapped against the skin, is also a common cause that has nothing to do with the metal.

Keeping it legible

Engraved steel does not fade the way a printed or colour-filled band does, which is the main advantage of metal. Wash it with warm soapy water, dry it, and rinse it after salt water or chlorine. Check the clasp and the link either side of the plate once or twice a year — a chain is only as reliable as its weakest link, and a lost bracelet protects nobody.

Bought once, no ongoing fee

This is a one-off purchase. The details are engraved into the band, so it keeps working with no app, no battery, no account and no renewal — see medical alert bracelets with no subscription for why we work that way.

If you also want a digital medical-history service, Mediband Group offers MedibandPlus as an optional low-cost membership. It is genuinely optional: the engraving on this bracelet does its job whether or not you ever subscribe.

Ordering for a clinic, school or service

Single bracelets can be ordered from this page with your engraving included. For a clinic, an aged-care provider, a disability service or a workplace ordering several with different engraving on each, tell us quantities and we will come back with pricing and a date.

Frequently asked questions

Is the engraving extra?

No. Personalised engraving is included in the price, and these ship with same-day engraving. You add your text when you order.

Front or back of the plate?

The back. The face keeps the polished plate and the red Star of Life, which is what signals it is a medical ID; the detail is read when it is turned over.

What if my details change?

Engraving is permanent, so changed details mean a new plate. If your medication changes often, a custom ID in a format you can update, or a silicone write-on band, may suit you better until things settle.

Can it be worn in the shower or the pool?

Yes. Rinse it after chlorine or salt water and dry it — that is the whole maintenance routine. Engraved steel does not fade, so legibility is not the thing to watch; the clasp is.

Classic or Slim for a child?

Usually Slim, for weight and proportion — but check the wrist measurement first, and bear in mind a growing child will need resizing. Many families use a silicone band through the growing years and move to steel later.

Do I have to pay a membership for it to work?

No. The information is engraved on the band, not stored behind a paywall, so there is nothing to renew. MedibandPlus exists as an optional digital service if you want one — the bracelet works fully without it.
