Older Australian wearing a Mediband — Aged Care funding pathways

Aged Care funding for medical IDs — Support at Home, CHSP and residential care

Medical IDs for older Australians sit across several funding pathways — Aged Care, the NDIS for younger-onset wearers, the Seniors Card discount, and out-of-pocket. This page explains what each pathway covers, where medical IDs typically fit, and what to ask your provider before assuming the cost is included.

Support at Home (what replaced Home Care Packages)

From 1 November 2025, in-home aged care funding in Australia moved from the Home Care Packages (HCP) program to the new Support at Home program. The change covers all older Australians receiving Commonwealth-funded in-home care — including those who held an HCP package before the transition.

Support at Home has eight ongoing funding classifications (up from HCP's four levels), plus separate restorative and end-of-life pathways. The highest ongoing classification funds up to approximately $78,106 per year. Medical IDs sit alongside other consumable and assistive-technology items inside a Support at Home participant's plan.

Within Support at Home, items like medical IDs typically fall under the Assistive Technology and Home Modifications (AT-HM) scheme. AT-HM covers items such as mobility aids, personal alarms, and home modifications, with means-tested participant contributions. Medical ID jewellery is not currently a listed AT-HM item — in practice, medical IDs are generally an out-of-pocket purchase rather than an AT-HM-funded item. Some providers will allocate care plan flexibility for safety-related items; the answer depends on the provider and the specific plan, so ask before assuming coverage.

Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP)

CHSP provides entry-level in-home support to over 840,000 older Australians each year, ahead of (or instead of) a Support at Home package. It funds services like domestic assistance, personal care, transport, social support, and allied health.

CHSP does not list medical IDs as a funded item. A CHSP provider can help administratively — placing the order with the wearer's permission, confirming the engraving with the wearer's GP — but the cost itself is typically paid by the wearer or family. CHSP is being progressively folded into the Support at Home program over the coming years.

Residential aged care

For older Australians in residential aged care, medical IDs are generally a private purchase made by the resident, family, or the facility itself when bands are bought in bulk for the wing or unit. Facility-level bulk orders qualify for trade pricing — ask about Mediband's bulk pricing on the Resellers and Wholesale page or by calling 1300 796 401.

In a memory-support unit specifically, the band travels with the resident to medical appointments and hospital transfers — situations where the facility file isn't in reach. Many facilities standardise on the Mediband W2677 Dementia Alert write-on band for memory-support residents and a custom-engraved silicone band for residents with complex multi-condition profiles.

NDIS for younger-onset wearers

Older Australians under 65 (or under 50 for First Nations Australians) who meet the NDIS disability access requirements can typically claim a Mediband under Assistive Technology or Consumables in their plan. This applies to a younger-onset dementia diagnosis, post-stroke disability, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's, or any other condition meeting the NDIS access test.

Mediband is an NDIS-registered supplier (provider 4050021192). We can invoice the NDIA directly, work through your plan manager, or sit alongside a self-managed plan. See the NDIS information page for the step-by-step access process and the three-tier turnaround for in-stock and engraved items.

Seniors Card 15% discount

Mediband offers Seniors Card holders a 15% discount* on all products, year-round. At checkout, enter SENIORS in the discount code field. The discount applies to custom-engraved bands, pre-printed bands, stainless steel, gold, accessories, and wallet cards.

State-equivalent cards qualify on the same basis — NSW Seniors Card, Queensland Seniors Card, Victorian Seniors Card, WA Seniors Card, SA Seniors Card, Tasmanian Seniors Card, NT Seniors Recognition Scheme card, and ACT Seniors Card. The discount stacks naturally with any out-of-pocket purchase. See the Seniors Card page for details.

Private health insurance and out-of-pocket

Some private health funds reimburse medical IDs under extras / general treatment / preventive items, particularly for wearers with documented anaphylaxis or specified chronic conditions. Coverage varies widely — check the fund's product disclosure statement or call the fund before purchase. Mediband can supply a tax invoice itemising the band, engraving, and SKU for claim purposes.

For older Australians not on a funded pathway, out-of-pocket is the standard route. Pre-printed bands ship from Australian stock same business day when ordered before midday AEST. Custom-engraved bands are made to order in Australia within 10–14 business days. The Seniors Card discount applies regardless of funding pathway.

What to ask your Support at Home or CHSP provider

Six questions to put to the provider before placing the order:

  1. Does the wearer's current Support at Home classification or CHSP package include any flexibility for safety-related items not on the AT-HM list?
  2. If the band needs to be paid out-of-pocket, will the provider place the order administratively on the wearer's behalf and bill back?
  3. Can the engraving be confirmed with the wearer's GP (or treating clinician) so the band matches the current care plan?
  4. Where should the wallet card be stored — with the wearer, with the provider, or both?
  5. If the wearer is transferred to hospital, does the provider have a protocol for ensuring the band and wallet card travel with them?
  6. When does the engraving need to be reviewed — on medication change, on annual care plan review, or both?

Three-tier turnaround

Mediband works to three turnaround tiers depending on the band and the funding pathway:

  • Same business day despatch — pre-printed silicone bands (B1792 Blood Thinners, B2099 Pacemaker Recipient, W2677 Dementia Alert, allergy range) when ordered before midday AEST.
  • 10–14 business days — custom-engraved silicone, custom stainless steel, Active hybrid, gold.
  • Priority pathway — available by phone (1300 796 401, business hours AEST) for upcoming hospital admissions, surgeries, or care transitions where the standard 10–14 day window doesn't work.

Frequently asked questions

What replaced Home Care Packages?

The Support at Home program replaced Home Care Packages (HCP) from 1 November 2025. Support at Home has eight ongoing funding classifications (up from HCP's four levels) plus restorative and end-of-life pathways. Existing HCP recipients were transitioned to Support at Home automatically; the per-person funding allocation may have shifted.

Are medical IDs funded under Support at Home?

Not as a listed item. Medical IDs are generally an out-of-pocket purchase rather than a listed item under the Assistive Technology and Home Modifications (AT-HM) scheme that sits inside Support at Home. Some providers allocate plan flexibility for safety-related items — ask your provider or care partner before assuming coverage.

Can a CHSP provider help with the purchase?

CHSP does not list medical IDs as a funded item. However, a CHSP provider can help administratively — placing the order with the wearer's permission, confirming the engraving with the wearer's GP, ensuring the band reaches the wearer. The cost itself is typically paid by the wearer or family.

What if the wearer is under 65 and on the NDIS?

Wearers under 65 (or under 50 for First Nations Australians) on the NDIS can typically claim a Mediband under Assistive Technology or Consumables. Mediband is an NDIS-registered supplier (provider 4050021192). This applies to younger-onset dementia, post-stroke disability, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's, and any other condition meeting the NDIS access test. See the NDIS information page.

Does the Seniors Card discount stack with anything else?

The 15% Seniors Card discount applies year-round to all products and stacks with the out-of-pocket pathway. It does not stack with NDIS-funded orders (where the NDIA pays the full price and the discount doesn't apply). For Support at Home wearers paying out-of-pocket because the band isn't covered by the AT-HM scheme, the Seniors Card discount applies normally.

How do residential aged care facilities order in bulk?

Facilities can order in bulk for a wing, memory-support unit, or whole facility at trade pricing. The most common bulk order is the W2677 Dementia Alert write-on band for memory-support residents, supplemented by custom-engraved bands for residents with complex multi-condition profiles. Call 1300 796 401 (AEST) to set up a facility account.

Can private health insurance cover a medical ID?

Some private health funds reimburse medical IDs under extras / general treatment / preventive items, particularly for wearers with documented anaphylaxis or specified chronic conditions. Coverage varies between funds and product tiers — check the fund's product disclosure statement or call the fund before purchase. Mediband supplies an itemised tax invoice for claim purposes.
