Allergies are an absolute pest for anyone inflicted. Make sure you're wearing a Mediband to tell others of any allergic reaction you are prone to. That said, prevention is better than the cure. Are there ways to reduce the chance of allergies and reduce the impact of allergies?

Dust and dust mites cause a very common allergic reaction. Have a home cleaning routine that seeks to reduce dust and therefore the mites that go long with it. Start by dusting thoroughly to disturb the dust and vacuum thoroughly after dusting. If possible do this twice a week. Wipe surfaces often with a damp cloth and wash bedding as often as is practical.

Reduce pet dander. The first step is to not have a pet that causes allergies in the first place - like birds and furry cats. But if that decision is out of your hands, there are some practical solutions. Keep the pet in one area of the house and vacuum that area often. Don't let it in your bedroom under any circumstances. Don't give it access to the laundry where clothing and bed linen may come in to contact with it. Brush the cat or dog often (and preferably, give the task to a non-allergic member of the family).

Mould spores are a constant source of allergy. The key here is to reduce moisture in mould-prone areas like the kitchen or bathroom. Keep windows slightly ajar when cooking or showering. Wipe down mould-prone surfaces regularly. Spray anti-mould solutions. Fix leaks and dripping taps as they occur. Limit houseplants in these areas as they attract mould spores. Consider a dehumidifier or a commercial anti-moisture product. A simple tub of baking soda tucked into at-risk corners will also help attract moisture to the soda rather than the wall or corner.

The work environment. Unfortunately today's high-rises with their reliance on air-con rather than fresh air can exacerbate allergies. Take a walk at least once an hour into the fresh air. Get plenty of exercise and plenty of sleep to help ward off allergic reactions. Keep your immune system healthy with herbal tea rather than caffeine. Make sure your vitamin intake through fresh fruits and vegetables is good - take carrot and celery slices as a healthy snack to work instead of relying on cakes and chocolate to get you through the day!
