The band that gets worn

Every medical ID faces the same test, and it is not a design test. It is whether the person puts it on tomorrow, and the day after, and in six months. A band that fails that test is worth nothing no matter how good the engraving is.

The Vivid Style exists for the people who fail that test with a conventional medical ID: children who do not want to look ill at school, teenagers who will not wear something clinical, adults who associate the whole category with hospitals. A bright band with a white stripe and the Mediband mark reads as a sports band at a glance. Nobody asks about it. It stays on.

How the reversible format works

The band has two faces. The outer one is the colour you chose with the Mediband mark on it. The inner one — against the skin — carries your engraved text: the condition, the medication, an emergency contact, whatever you specify when you order.

What a responder does with it

Checking wrists and neck for medical identification is part of a standard primary survey, which we cover in do paramedics check medical ID. The medical mark on the outer face is what signals that this band is an ID rather than a souvenir; turning it over is a two-second action once that is established.

Why the detail goes on the inside

Two reasons, and only one of them is about privacy. The first is that your medical history is nobody's business at a bus stop. The second is practical: there is far more room for text on a face that does not also have to carry a colour and a logo, so the engraving can say something useful rather than a two-word abbreviation.

What to put on it

You specify the text, which is the real advantage over a pre-printed band. What is worth the space:

• The condition or allergy, named plainly — this is what changes the first decision
• Critical medication, particularly anticoagulants, insulin or an adrenaline autoinjector
• An emergency contact with the country code if you travel
• A device, such as a pacemaker or an insulin pump
• Nothing else — a crowded band is a slow band

The advice to carry identification is not ours alone. ASCIA states that where a drug allergy is confirmed, you may be advised to carry medical identification of that allergy. Vivid or Classic — picking between the two

We make this band in two finishes. They are identical in function; the difference is what the outer face is doing.

If you want the medical information on the outside rather than the inside, neither of these is the right product — the Bold Alert Signature puts it front and centre, and the pre-printed alert range states a single condition permanently at the lowest cost.

Why the minimum order is four

It sounds like an upsell. It is mostly about the failure mode we see most often, which is a single band taken off for a shower and never put back on.

Where the four usually end up

One worn. One in the gym bag or the school bag. One in the car or the bedside drawer. One spare for when the first is lost, which it will be. Having a replacement within arm's reach is the difference between a gap of a minute and a gap of a fortnight.

You can mix colours across the order, which also lets a child pick a different one each week — a small thing that does a surprising amount of work in keeping a band on a nine-year-old.

Material, fit and safety

Breakaway-safe silicone

The band is a single piece of soft silicone with no clasp and no metal. It stretches over the hand to go on, and it will give rather than hold if it catches on something — which matters for children, for anyone working with machinery, and in a care setting. No metal also means no questions in an imaging suite and nothing to corrode in a pool.

Getting the size right

Measure around the wrist and compare against our wrist measurement guide. Snug enough that it will not slide over the hand in a scuffle, loose enough to rotate freely and take a fingertip underneath. Re-measure a child's wrist each year.

Care

Wash with warm water and mild soap. Rinse after chlorine, salt water or sunscreen. Air dry away from direct heat. The engraving is cut into the silicone rather than printed on it, so it does not scuff off — but check the inner face occasionally and replace the band if the text has become hard to read.
