How to Prevent Dangerous Allergies in Young Children

According to recent allergy research, 8 particular foods cause over 90% off food allergies, with peanuts being the third most prevalent. Allergies are common in everyone, but especially in young children. And for many people, allergies experienced as a child can be outgrown.

You have likely heard of a child in your kid’s class who is deathly allergic to peanut butter, or maybe someone has to keep an EpiPen with them at recess in case they are stung by a bee.

Why are allergies so scary?

Allergies can have incredibly adverse side effects ranging from itchy, watery eyes or maybe a small rash to something as severe as anaphylactic shock.

Additionally, an allergic reaction can happen at the drop of a hat and action needs to be taken quickly, especially depending on the severity of it.

Products like a medical alert band can help be that watchful eye for you, so to speak. While your child is away at a friend’s house or at school, a medical band is a great way to identify what allergies they have so that others know without even having to ask your child.

Medical Id bracelets are great for several different scenarios, both in everyday life and in the event of an emergency. For some children, their allergies are to certain medicines, and this would be vital information should your child be in an accident of some sort, but will likely be information your child would not know.

What are some common allergies?

Allergies can have a variety of triggers, including foods, insects or bugs, certain elements of the outdoors, etc.

However, there are a handful that are most common and most commonly seen presenting themselves during childhood:

1. Milk

2. Eggs

3. Peanuts

4. Soy

5. Wheat

6. Tree nuts

7. Fish

8. Shellfish

Of these allergies, milk, eggs, wheat and soy allergies are the ones that are most common to be outgrown. But other foods on this list might be harder to outgrow, meaning these could potentially be a lifelong allergy.

How can these allergies be prevented?

Like any other health-related scenario, allergies are not completely avoidable. But you can take a few necessary steps to increase the likelihood that your child either won’t have the allergy to a certain food and/or item or that they will outgrow it sooner:

Introduce common food allergens around six months of age.

Introducing common food allergens early is important for your child. The earlier you make the introduction, the less likely they are to suffer from the allergy.

Offer tolerated common food allergens regularly.

Give your baby a small taste of what they are allergic to? That’s right. Sometimes the best way to overcome something is to be exposed to it, in a controlled instance, of course.

Try techniques such as blending some of the common allergens in with their normal food, exposing them to it in small doses.

Breastfeed, if possible.

This is a touchy subject because breastfeeding is not possible for all mothers, and we approach this topic with the utmost respect and caution.

This is not a foolproof way to protect your baby from allergies; however, if breastfeeding is an option for you it might help prevent the development of some food allergies in your baby.
