health medical id smartphone iPhone with medic alert bracelets and necklacesThey’re everywhere. Smartphones jam-packed with apps are here to stay and using them, well, in a smart way, to stay healthy makes a lot of sense. Digital health is now big business with apps that measure heart rate, steps walked, exercise regimes, blood pressure, glucose and other bodily functions. Here are five ways to use your smartphone to stay healthy.

  1. Sleep well. Go to sleep with the calming sounds of whales, babbling brooks or whatever takes your fancy. Search calming sounds in the app store.
  2. Track exercise. A number of apps like Runkeeper will do this for you. Some now feed their data into the Apple Health dashboard and you can track rates of exercise, calorie intake and more.
  3. Toothbrush timer. Do the kids brush their teeth properly? Get the toothbrush timer app and give them a fun way to brush well, for the correct time.
  4. Measure your heart rate. A number of apps use your phone’s camera to measure your heart rate at rest or after exercise. Build up a picture of your heart health over time.
  5. Health Record. If you have an ongoing illness that requires monitoring many apps (like Health Vault in Windows or Health in Apple) can store all your significant data along with ICE details.
