Asthmatic Alert Medical ID Bracelet
A turquoise silicone band reading ALERT! in white and ASTHMATIC in yellow, with the Mediband and Star of Life marks moulded in. One piece, no clasp, nothing to open or scan — it is readable by whoever happens to be standing there.
The case for it is narrower and sharper than "wear a medical ID". It rests on one symptom of a severe attack in particular.

The symptom that makes a wristband worth wearing
Healthdirect lists the signs of a severe asthma attack as difficulty speaking — it may be hard to finish a sentence before needing another breath — along with blue lips, a reliever that is not helping, feeling very distressed or exhausted from trying to breathe, deep sucking movements at the throat or chest, and drowsiness.
Why "difficulty speaking" changes the maths
Most medical conditions take away your voice only at the very end, when you are already unconscious. Asthma takes it away early, while you are still upright, still conscious and still trying to explain. A person who cannot finish a sentence cannot say I'm asthmatic, my inhaler is in my bag — and that is precisely the window in which saying it would matter most.
A band on the wrist says it for them. It also pre-empts the most common wrong guess, which is a panic attack: breathlessness, distress and an inability to talk look similar from the outside, and the two are managed very differently.
What to do, and when to call
Healthdirect is explicit that if someone is having severe trouble breathing or shows signs of a severe asthma attack, you call triple zero (000) immediately or go to the nearest emergency department. A serious flare-up needs urgent medical attention — and this can happen even to someone whose asthma is usually mild or well controlled.
How common this is
Healthdirect reports that asthma affects 1 in 9 adults and 1 in 5 children in Australia. At those numbers, most classrooms, most sports teams and most workplaces contain several people with asthma — which cuts both ways. It means help is often nearby, and it means an individual's asthma is rarely the thing anyone is specifically watching for. A band is what singles you out of that background.
Who it is for
- Children at school, daycare, camps and excursions, where supervising adults rotate and may not have read the file
- Teenagers and adults who exercise, where exertion is a trigger and bystanders are strangers
- Anyone whose asthma has previously needed emergency treatment
- Older adults, where breathlessness is easily attributed to something else
- Anyone travelling, working remotely, or regularly among people who do not know them
What the band says — and what it cannot
The wording is moulded in at manufacture and fixed. There is no engraving plate and no write-on panel, so you cannot add a name, a contact number, your trigger or your reliever to it.
If you need your own details on it
Use a write-on band, which has a panel you fill in by hand and can change when the details change, or a made-to-order Mediband Custom ID in engraved steel or custom-printed silicone. Our guide to medical ID abbreviations covers which shorthand clinicians read reliably if you are drafting the wording.
It also does not replace an asthma action plan, carrying a reliever, or making sure the adults around a child know where that reliever is and how to use it. The band buys recognition; the plan and the medication are what use the time it buys.
Choosing between the asthma bands
| Band | How it reads | Choose it when |
|---|---|---|
| This band — turquoise alert | Alert wording always visible | Maximum readability, lowest cost, simplest to replace |
| Reversible design band | Pattern outward, wording inside | The wearer will not keep an obvious alert band on |
| Reversible designer band | Pattern outward, wording inside | Adults who want it to read as a bracelet |
| Write-on band | You add the detail | You want the trigger, reliever or a contact number on it |
The reversible options carry the Star of Life on the outer face so a responder knows to turn them over. If a child has stopped wearing the turquoise band, swapping to a reversible one is usually a better move than arguing about it — the band that stays on is the one that works. Everything we make is under medical alert bracelets.
Sizing, wear and care
Fit
Small, medium, large and extra large. Measure around the wrist and compare against our wrist measurement guide. Snug enough that it will not slide over the hand, loose enough to rotate and to slip a fingertip under. Re-measure a child's wrist each year rather than assuming last year's band still fits.
Care
Medical-grade silicone with no metal and no clasp, so it stays on in the shower and the pool and causes no problems around imaging. Wash with warm water and mild soap, rinse after chlorine, salt water or sunscreen, and let it air dry. Replace it once the colour-fill has worn back far enough that the wording no longer reads at a glance.
For schools, clinics and sporting clubs
Single bands can be ordered from this page. For a school sick bay, a pharmacy counter, a general practice, a camp or a sporting club, tell us quantities and sizes and we will come back with pricing and a date.
Frequently asked questions
Can I put my reliever or my trigger on the band?
Not on this one — the wording is fixed. Use a write-on band for handwritten detail you can update, or a custom engraved ID for something permanent. Plenty of people wear the fixed band for instant recognition and a custom one for the specifics.
Is it worth wearing if my asthma is mild?
Healthdirect notes that you can have an asthma attack even when your symptoms are usually mild or well controlled. Mild asthma is an argument for a band rather than against one, because it is exactly the case where nobody around you is expecting it.
Will it survive sport and swimming?
It is waterproof silicone with nothing to catch or corrode, so it stays on for training, games and the pool. That matters for asthma specifically, since exertion is a common trigger and sport is when a metal ID tends to come off and stay off.
Does my child still need an asthma action plan at school?
Yes. The plan is the document staff follow and it should be where they can reach it, with a reliever. The band is for the adult who has not read the plan — a relief teacher, a parent helper, a coach at an away game.
Is it safe for sensitive skin?
It is silicone with no metal clasp and no nickel. Reactions are uncommon; irritation is more often caused by moisture trapped under a band worn too tight. If any wristband leaves a mark, take it off, let the skin recover, and check with your GP or pharmacist before wearing it again.
Do paramedics check for wristbands?
Checking wrists and neck for medical identification is part of a standard primary survey. We go through how that works in do paramedics check medical ID.
